Zade Meadows: who he is, the books he’s in, and why the mask works

A spoiler-light guide to the masked hero of H. D. Carlton’s Haunting Adeline: the reading order, his tropes, the warnings, and what to read next. Written by the author of Zade Masked, which is a different man.

Every masked man on BookTok owes him rent. If you have ever searched for a dark romance with a mask in it, Google has probably shown you his name, and if you typed “zade masked” you may have landed here instead of on a fan wiki. So here is the guide I would want: who Zade Meadows is, which books he is in and in what order, what makes him work, and what to read once you have finished him. Spoiler-light, no long quotes, and the warnings where they belong.

Who is Zade Meadows?

Zade Meadows is the hero of H. D. Carlton’s Cat and Mouse duet. He is a hacker with money, reach and a private war: he runs an organisation that goes after human traffickers, and he is very comfortable with violence when it points at the people he hunts.

Then he sees Adeline Reilly. She is a successful writer of dark, gothic suspense who has moved into her family’s old house, Parsons Manor. He starts watching her. He gets inside. He leaves red roses. She knows someone is there, and the book is the game between them: the mouse who will not run quite as fast as she should, and the cat who has no intention of letting go.

That is the whole hook, and it is why his name travels. Zade is not a misunderstood soft boy in a balaclava. He is obsessive, possessive and dangerous, and the books ask you to want him anyway.

What books is Zade Meadows in? (reading order)

  1. Haunting Adeline · Cat and Mouse book 1 · spice 5/5, darkness 5/5 · warnings
  2. Hunting Adeline · Cat and Mouse book 2 · spice 5/5, darkness 5/5 · warnings

Read them in that order. It is one story told across two books, and this shelf flags Haunting Adeline as ending on a cliffhanger, so have the second one ready. The Cat and Mouse series page has both books side by side. H. D. Carlton’s other books on this shelf are on her author page.

His tropes, in one list

  • Masked stalker. The mask is not decoration. It is how he gets close, and how the fear and the want end up in the same room. More masked man romance.
  • Stalker romance. Surveillance, break-ins and a man who will not leave. More stalker romance.
  • Morally grey vigilante. He kills, and the books aim him at worse men. That is the bargain the reader is asked to accept.
  • Possessive hero. “Mine” is the whole personality. More possessive heroes.
  • Gothic setting. An old house, a writer alone in it, roses on the dresser. More gothic romance.

Why readers love Zade Meadows

Because he is a fantasy with the safety catch off. Obsession in real life is frightening and nobody should want it. On the page, a man who would burn down a city for one woman is a very old story, and Zade is that story in a mask with a laptop. He falls first, he falls completely, and he never pretends to be good.

There is also the mask itself. A covered face makes the reader do the work. The voice, the hands and the patience carry the scenes, and the dread never quite leaves the room. I wrote about that in The mask is the point, and it is the reason I keep coming back to this lane.

And because the books do not flinch. People argue about Haunting Adeline: about consent, about harm, about whether it should be as popular as it is. Those arguments are fair, and they are the reason the warnings matter. For the bigger debate, read Is dark romance harmful?

Haunting Adeline trigger warnings: read these first

This is not a beginner book. On our shelf both books sit at darkness 5 of 5. Haunting Adeline is flagged for sexual assault, dubious consent, non-consent, torture, breath play, knife play, somnophilia, degradation, stalking, violence, kidnapping and murder. Hunting Adeline is flagged for sexual assault, dubious consent, non-consent, torture, trafficking, stalking, violence, captivity, murder and trauma. Those are book-specific flags, grouped by us, and they include sexual violence. Read the Haunting Adeline warning page and the Hunting Adeline warning page, check the author’s own list too, and if a flag is a hard line for you, skip it. There is no prize for finishing a book that hurts you. If a term is new, the trigger warnings A to Z explains it.

Zade Meadows vs Zade Masked

Different men. Zade Meadows belongs to H. D. Carlton and lives in her books. Zade Masked is mine: an original UK dark romance serial with its own masked man, a woman in a black dress, and one rule, that the mask stays on. Same lane, a nod in the name, a completely separate story. It is not affiliated with or endorsed by H. D. Carlton.
