Best Gothic Dark Romance Books (2026)Old houses, bad weather and worse men, ranked
Gothic romance is the house as a character: old walls, locked rooms, weather that matches the mood. Dark gothic romance adds a man who belongs in that house a little too well.
Good October reading, and good reading the rest of the year if you like your romance candlelit.
How this list works: these are the 12 most-rated books on Goodreads among our library's gothic romance shelf, scored dark (3 of 5) or darker, with a cap per author and series so one name does not take over. Spice and darkness are our scores out of 5. Every blurb sticks to what our book pages say.
